In Transcarpathia gathered 64 thousand signatures against the language quota on TV

The Hungarian community of Transcarpathia addressed to the President, which notes that the law on language quotas on TV restricts the rights of national minorities in Ukraine. The petition was signed by 64 069. About it reports “the Country” with reference to “news of Transcarpathia”.

“We initiated the collection of signatures on the inadmissibility of restriction of rights of national minorities to use their native language. The result of the 112 settlements of Transcarpathian region were collected 64 069 signatures of Ukrainian citizens under the requirement of the inadmissibility of restriction of the rights of national minorities to use their native language in all spheres of public life,” – said the MP from Transcarpathia Vasyl Brenzovych, who represents the Hungarian community.

Honorary President of the Union of Hungarians of Ukraine Mykhailo Tovt said that similar bills provoke a linguistic split in the country, inter-ethnic confrontation and hostility.

The document should convey to Petro Poroshenko this week.

We will remind that on March 16, the deputies of the Verkhovna Rada in the first reading voted for language quotas on TV. “For” bill No. 5313 voted 244 MP. According to the Chairman of the parliamentary Committee on freedom of speech and information policy Victoria syumar, the document provides for mandatory Ukrainization 75% of airtime.

As reported, Ukraine has not appealed to the Council of Europe with a request to conduct an official examination of the bill about a minimum of 75% of broadcasting in Ukrainian. This was announced by the representative of the Council of Europe office in Ukraine.
