Guterres and Poroshenko

Poroshenko supported the idea of reforming the UN.

The United Nations must take a more active part in addressing the pressing issues of Ukraine. This was stated by President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko at a joint briefing with Secretary General of the UN Antonio Guterres in Kiev on Sunday, July 9.

“I want to Express my confidence that our meeting will become a starting point in order to find a more active model of UN engagement in addressing the complex challenges that are now facing Ukraine”, – said Poroshenko.

The President also noted that the failure of the UN to adequately respond to new challenges and threats in recent years provoked criticism from different sides.

According to him, Ukraine supports the idea of UN reform, with an emphasis on mechanisms of conflict prevention and “interested in the fact that the authority of the Secretary General and the UN grew up.”

“The world needs a strong and effective United Nations, so it needs to be reformed according to the current threats… Before the UN Secretariat and member States has faced a difficult task – the restoration of authority, recovery efficiency, trust, and respect for the organization. It is time, in my opinion, to strong and sometimes painful reforms,” – said Poroshenko.

In turn, Guterres said that the UN is ready to strengthen cooperation with the Ukrainian government and to provide him with assistance in the issue of reforms. According to the Secretary General, the UN are interested in the development of the Ukrainian state.

“We won’t tell Ukraine what kind of reform do, but we have a great interest in the proposed solutions and commitments. We are absolutely ready to support the Ukrainian government in the reforms, which are aimed at development of welfare of the Ukrainian people,”– said Guterres.

Earlier at a meeting with Ukrainian Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman, the UN Secretary General promised that the organization would continue humanitarian aid to Ukraine.
