The draft language quotas for Ukrainian television has become a step closer to reality. Today, March 16, the Verkhovna Rada endorsed the first reading of bill No. 5313 to increase the quota of the Ukrainian language of audiovisual media. Voted 244 people’s deputies.

If the deputies supported the document, and in the second reading, the all-Ukrainian TV channels in Ukraine will broadcast at least 75% transmission in the Ukrainian language during the day. Regional and local TV channels are obliged to broadcast in the Ukrainian half of the time. Films will need to be accompanied by subtitles.

The bill has provoked a lot of discussion, because his critics claim that he did not so much protect the Ukrainian language as a blow to Russian. That is why not a single vote in support of it gave “opposition bloc”, and two parliamentary groups together are given by only 5 votes. Among independent voted against only the plaintiff. 5 people abstained in the BPP, among them Alexander Granovsky, and 23 deputies simply did not vote, including the leader of the Mejlis Refat Chubarov.
