Shown polar cap formed by dry ice (carbon dioxide). It arises from carbon dioxide, which in winter falls as snow from the atmosphere onto the planet’s surface.

The temperature at the South pole when it drops to minus 130 degrees Celsius, making the region the coldest place on the planet.

The polar caps are made scientific instrument HiRISE (High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment) orbital station MRO (Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter). The device was launched to Mars in 2005, and in 2006 has reached the red planet. In 2008, its primary mission has come to an end, but NASA has extended the operation of the probe. In addition to shooting the planet’s surface the unit is involved in transmitting signals to earth from the Mars Rover.
