The time to become acquainted with the materials of ex-President Viktor Yanukovych and his entourage can extend up to six months. This broadcast channel “112 Ukraine”, said MP, Deputy Chairman of the Committee on justice, Sergei Alexeev.
“I have information that the investigation in these cases is nearly finished, but there are some issues with the law. Mean procedural time to become acquainted with the case materials. We are talking about a group of people and you understand that when we are talking about a group of people, the timing should be slightly more than under current law in cases of conviction. Therefore, in the Parliament now will soon introduced a bill, under which will be two solutions to the issue,” he said.
At the same time, it is difficult to tell how long they can extend.
“It all depends on what the bill will find support. If you find support for a bill that you can extend the time it will be somewhere else for a few months. If you find support for the bill, after providing for the introduction of the case, stop time, they are also several months to half a year. And then, I believe that the Ukrainian national courts will be able to consider these things,” he added.
News: Ukraine can lead the case against Yanukovych without the involvement of the ICC in the Hague.
The MP added that to assess the effectiveness of the investigator in these cases will be possible only when at the trial it will be made public, the judicial investigation will be held and when all the evidence will be made public.
He also commented about the fact that Ukraine has still not ratified the Rome Statute.
“Our Ukrainian courts can also give a legal assessment, and even the evidence collected and proved in our courts, they will have persuasive value for the international criminal court”, he added.
We will remind, earlier people’s Deputy of Ukraine Olena Sotnyk (“Samopomich”) reported that the General Prosecutor’s office stopped a pre-trial investigation in criminal proceedings against ex-President Viktor Yanukovich and officials close to him, by publishing the answer of the GPU on the request.
Later in the GPU confirmed this information, saying that the stop has occurred in order for the case not been closed, as the CPC has a limited time frame of the investigation – year from the date of notification of suspicion. If the investigation does not suspend, a period will end and the case should be closed.
