Ukrainian human rights activists urged the international community to pay attention to detention in Belarus

Law enforcement agencies of Belarus carried out arbitrary arrests of activists, human rights defenders, journalists and even passers-by, it should draw the attention of the world community. This is stated in the statement of a number of Ukrainian human rights organizations, published on the website of the Ukrainian Helsinki Union.

“On March 25, riot police blocked the work of the human rights center “Viasna” was arrested nearly 57 human rights activists and volunteers, who had to observe the conduct of the meeting. Among them, the head of the Belarusian Helsinki Committee Aleh Hulak, the representative of the international organization Frontline Defenders Mary Semenkova, head of the Belarusian documentary centralise St. Michael’s, the co-coordinator of the Ukrainian public organization Crimeasos Evgenia andreyuk, a human rights activist Palina Brodick and the others. The persecution of Belarusian citizens for expression of their opinion and peaceful Assembly is unacceptable and violates international standards in the field of human rights”, – said in a statement.

The authors of the document Express solidarity with civil society of Belarus and demanded from the authorities to stop persecution of participants of peaceful assemblies, release them to stop the practice of obstructing the freedom of peaceful Assembly and not to obstruct the work of human rights defenders and journalists.

“We appeal to international organizations about the need to attract the maximum attention to the events in Belarus, in particular, administrative and criminal cases which were initiated against the activists, and the use of all possible mechanisms to prevent politically motivated persecution of civil society of Belarus”, – stated in the message.

Also, the authors appealed to the OSCE with the recommendation to extend the Moscow mechanism of the Organization in Belarus and to consider the postponement of the session of the OSCE parliamentary Assembly to be held in Minsk in July 2017.

The document contained the names of representatives of the Crimean human rights group, Ukrainian Helsinki Union on human rights, the Centre for civil liberties, Centre for information on human rights, Media initiatives on human rights and Kharkiv human rights group.

To freedom Day in Belarus is held today of the event, which was marked by mass arrests. So, it was reported about the detention of hundreds of citizens, as well as 57 human rights activists and volunteers. Later they were released, among them were four persons with residence permit in Ukraine. In the center of the Belarusian capital have established cordons of security forces, the situation is tense.

The Belarusian Association of journalists reported the detention of 25 members of the media, of which 20 were released.
