Exactly two years ago, on 26 may 2014, fighting broke out between Ukrainian security forces and militants of the so-called “Donetsk people’s Republic” for control of the international airport “Donetsk” named after Sergei Prokofiev.

On the night of 26 may, the fighters began the operation to seize the airport, and in the afternoon occurred the first battle for the airport. The defense of the airport lasted for 242 days, and its defenders called “cyborgs”. For the first time their so-called militants themselves, so they described the Ukrainian resistance fighters.

According to the commander of the 93rd mechanized brigade, during the fighting for the Donetsk airport hot spot has been about 1 thousand fighters. It was the soldiers of the 93rd brigade along with the 3rd regiment of special forces were the first “cyborgs”. In addition to soldiers of these units, life at the airport gave the guys from “Right sector”, of the 95th brigade, 79 brigade. Just last week the defense – from 14 to 21 January at the airport killed about 20 “cyborgs”, about 95 wounded.

The militants fired at the airport and soldiers defending it from all possible weapons, has repeatedly been reported about the use of them prohibited weapons such as white phosphorus. One of the men told me they saw a bright glow above the airport.

“When we drove up, the sky over the Sands shone, like during a severe thunderstorm. It was like he was pierced by dozens of lightning. Then we found out what’s shooting at us is an enemy. It’s not mortars, not howitzers and “Grad” (something we already know). Maybe “Tornado” or “Hurricane.” But in any case, nothing good. We did not agree! It turns out that is not clear in General, against people with what weapons we are fighting”, – says the fighter.

13 January 2015 during a bout of collapsed control tower. After that few weeks were blown up the remaining structures in the new terminal.

One of the “cyborgs” Andrew “La Boheme” Sarasin says that the new terminal was destroyed after militants under the guise of humanitarian aid and, in his opinion, under the guise of the OSCE was brought back three tons of TNT.

“In the same new terminal just under the guise of the OSCE mission has delivered three tons of TNT and then it just exploded,” said Sarasin.

Under the rubble were buried dozens of fighters. The fate of some not known until now. One of the “cyborg” managed to stay alive under the concrete rubble. Under the rubble for eight days held Alexander litvinyuk.

After the collapse of floors in the building of the new terminal of the airport captured by the rebels were not less than 20 fighters. At the very end of the story of the Donetsk airport captured by the militants was Oleg Kuzmin – the commander of the 90th battalion of the 81st brigade. He was released on may 22.

Questions concerning the advisability of retention of the airport arose in the society and among the military after the fall of meteovyshka. However, “cyborg” was under orders to keep the airport. It was impossible to pass though, because our fighters controlled the runway, which can somehow be used. Many believed and believe that to hold the airport after the fall meteovyshka was crazy.

ATO forces left the WCT 21 Jan 2015. Ukrainian security forces moved approximately a mile and held the line of defense in the surrounding settlements. According to the peace accords recognized the Donetsk airport demilitarized zone, but near it periodically are fighting. In order to monitor the situation around the airport, the OSCE monitoring mission established in his area of surveillance cameras, but recently the militants have cut off.

According to the General staff of VSU, the number of attacks on positions of ATO forces in the area of the WCT significantly decreased, however, to silence very far.
