A referendum on amendments to the Constitution, the last Sunday in Tajikistan, gave the opportunity to the incumbent President of the country Emomali Rahmon re-elected to an unlimited number of times, informs radio “Azattyk”.

They also approved the reduction of the age qualification for candidates for the post from 35 to 30 years, which, experts say, will allow the son of Emomali Rahmon to run for the presidency in 2020. Now the President’s son is only 28 years old. In 2015 he was appointed head of the Agency for state financial control and combating corruption. Only the head of state nine children — seven daughters and two sons.

Changes of the Constitution provides for lowering the age of candidates in members of Parliament and the constitutional court to 30 years and a ban on the formation of parties of religious character.

Only the referendum resulted in more than 40 amendments to the Constitution.

According to preliminary data of the Central Commission for elections and referenda, 94.5% of residents were in favor of changing the Constitution.

Rakhmon has headed Tajikistan since 1994, when the country was a civil war. Since then, he’s re-elected three times: in 1999, 2006 and 2013. In 2003, according to the results of a nationwide referendum, the presidential term was increased from five to seven years, with all the previous cadences Rakhmon set to zero.
