The President’s statement

President Petro Poroshenko will speak to the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew with a request to give Thomas regarding the Ukrainian Autocephalous local Church.

Tomos is a decree, Encyclical Epistle of the Primate of the local Orthodox Church in some important matters of Church order. By granting of the Tomos of some of the “parent” (Kirikkale) Church officially proclaimed autonomy in the management or autocephaly.

In order to make such a statement, the President specifically called a meeting with the chairmen of parliamentary factions.

He added that to his Holiness Bartholomew, you must appeal and the head of state and Church hierarchies.

Poroshenko noted that the statement has been signed by all the bishops of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Kyiv Patriarchate and Autocephalous Church, and added that “doors are open” to the bishops of other churches.

He urged the Verkhovna Rada as soon as possible to support this appeal to Bartholomew.

“Today Ukraine is closer than ever to having its own Autocephalous national Church. I really hope that this decision can be made to 1030 anniversary of the baptism of Ukraine-Rus ‘ (in 2018 – ed.)”, – said Poroshenko.

The head of state stressed that it would be “absolutely a historic event.”

“This event of Ukraine’s Independence, which occurs in very challenging times so that we had its the only Autocephalous Church, prayer combined with other local churches, but administratively not dependent neither from Moscow nor from anyone else,” – said Poroshenko.

He noted that a single local Orthodox Church will not become public.

“All believers have and will have the freedom to choose both the temple and the Church’s jurisdiction. And I also want to emphasize that anyone who wants to stay in that Church, which will remain United with the Russian Orthodox Church, they also retain the guaranteed right of own choice,” said Poroshenko.

A week ago, by the way, Poroshenko during his visit to Turkey met with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I.

“The Ukrainian President noted the importance of the introduction of a Single national Orthodox Church in Ukraine wants the Ukrainian people”, – said the press service of the head of state.

The Church situation in Ukraine

One of the largest Orthodox churches of Ukraine is the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate, which is subordinate to the Russian Orthodox Church.

Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Kyiv Patriarchate and the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church, which together also represent a significant portion of Orthodox believers of Ukraine, are in an irregular canonical status.

Himself Poroshenko, according to Ukrainian truth, is to the faithful of the UOC of the Moscow Patriarchate.

64.7% of Ukrainians consider themselves Orthodox, while most of them consider themselves UOC-KP, said the results of the poll.

The largest number of Orthodox (39,5%) identificeret themselves with UOC-Kyivan Patriarchate, 25,4% consider themselves “just Orthodox”, 23,3% consider themselves UOC-Moscow Patriarchate, 4.8% is Orthodox parishioners of the UAOC, and 1.3% – directly “credited” themselves as Russian (Russian) Orthodox Church.

Among the Church hierarchy the Supreme confidence of the respondents are using the Patriarch. Fully or rather trust him for 39.1% of citizens of Ukraine, more likely, or no trust at 12.9%. On the second place on popularity among Ukrainians the head of the UGCC Svyatoslav, trust him 24.7% of respondents don’t trust to 11.5.

The head of the UOC-MP, Metropolitan Onufry of trust of 20.7%, don’t trust of 26.0%.

For the creation in Ukraine “of the Unified Local Orthodox Church independent from other Church centers outside of Ukraine” are 44.3 per cent of Ukrainians consider themselves Orthodox.

21.6% of the Orthodox believe if a single Ukrainian Local Orthodox Church is established, it should be headed by the head of the UOC-KP Filaret. 15.6% of sees at the head of “personality, which determines the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew.” 6.6% of Orthodox Ukrainians see in this role of Metropolitan Onufriy, Primate of the UOC-MP.

The reaction of the churches

In the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate agreed to the establishment of its own Autocephalous national Church, but to the canonical basis.

“I think that this is all over a big zilch as it had many times before. There will be a lot of noise in the media, and this will all end,” – said the Deputy Chairman of the Department for external Church relations of the UOC Archpriest Nikolai Danilevich.

Archpriest said that “to begin such work is necessary with the UOC (i.e. the Moscow Patriarchate), not its separate parts.”

“The jacket to the button’s prostrachivajut, but rather a button to a jacket”, he concluded.

Danilevich said that the UOC-MP was in favour of overcoming division and United Church. He added that the Church theme is best for the current government, which uses this theme before the election.

“A government that might want this topic to use to stay for a second term, I would like to remind the following: no one in our country in Church the subject was not able to do so. The failures on this topic was, and winnings I do not remember”, – he wrote.

Danilevich added that the discussion of the President and the heads of the factions of the issue of creating a single Ukrainian Orthodox Church is not within its competence.

“It sounds as weird if we had written: “Metropolitan Onufry has collected session of the Holy Synod of the UOC. A question about Ukraine joining NATO”, – he explained and added that it is impossible to decide the fate of the Church without the Church itself.

However, the Patriarch of the UOC-KP Filaret supported the decision of President Petro Poroshenko and expressed hope that the Ecumenical Patriarch will decide to recognize the Ukrainian Church’s autocephaly.

Big politics?

“The appeal to the problem of the local Church in Ukraine – evidence of the complete crisis of ideas in the presidential team. Use as a pre-election technology of the Church question became possible because of the lack of progress in issues of security and territorial integrity, poverty, infrastructural crisis, cooperation with the EU and the United States, the failure of almost all “144” loudly touted “reform”,” believes political analyst Konstantin Matvienko.

“The institutional Church and state separated but are actually separate them is difficult. I’m not loyal to the Church, but sincerely for her fate. The recognition of autocephaly, if it still will not solve anything. In Ukraine will be 2 Orthodox jurisdiction. All this takes time, can go for decades. Because there are so many people who want to remain in the Moscow Patriarchate. A lot of them, and the state will handle it. Conflicts will continue,” said the religious scholar Anatoly Babinski.

According to him, Kyiv Patriarchate and Autocephalous Church is not canonically. It is very important to obtain. And if you manage to get a significant part of problems in interfaith relations in Ukraine will be lifted. Our government has done a little too much pomp, the complications can be very sharp. If Constantinople goes to the step of recognition of the autocephaly in Ukraine, the reaction of the Moscow Patriarchate will be very hard. The confrontation may continue for a few years.
