Poroshenko met with Tusk

The presidents of the EU and Ukraine held talks at the Mariinsky Palace. The visit of the European leader dedicated to the fifth anniversary of the events on the Maidan.

The President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko held talks with President of the European Council Donald Tusk, who on Monday, February 18, paid a visit to Kyiv, UKRINFORM reported.

Poroshenko met Tusk on the threshold of the Mariinsky Palace and greeted him in Polish, after which policy switched to English.

“I am pleased to welcome good friend of Ukraine, a reliable partner of Donald Tusk, President of the European Council, in these deeply symbolic days for Ukraine,” said Poroshenko at the beginning of the meeting.

The head of state reminded that on 18 February five years ago in the Mariinsky Park near the Mariinsky Palace, the Berkut fighters shot the guys in self-defense.

“These days, Ukraine and the world bows their heads before the sacrificial feat of the Heavenly Hundred Heroes who gave their lives for a new and democratic Ukraine”, – said Poroshenko, adding that it was a “fight for European values.”

In turn, the President of the Council of Europe stressed the importance of reforms in Ukraine and protection of Ukrainian people from the “cynical and mindless aggression”.

“It is very important to come to Ukraine, to pay tribute to the Ukrainian people,” – said Tusk.

Earlier it was reported that from 18 to 20 February official visit to Ukraine will be the President of the European Council Donald Tusk. During the visit, Tusk will meet with President Petro Poroshenko, Verkhovna Rada Chairman of Andrey Paruby, Prime Minister Vladimir Groisman. It is also expected that Tusk will deliver a speech in the Verkhovna Rada and will visit Lviv national University named after Ivan Franko.

We will remind, Poroshenko and Tusk met in the Congress of the European people’s party in November last year.
