Treaty of friendship between Ukraine and Russia may be terminated from 1 April 2019
On the website of the Verkhovna Rada published the draft law of the President on the dissolution of the Treaty of friendship between Ukraine and Russia.
President Petro Poroshenko suggested the Verkhovna Rada to terminate the Treaty of friendship, cooperation and partnership between Ukraine and Russia on April 1, 2019. This is stated in the text of the bill, published on Monday, December 3, on the Parliament website.
“Cease from 1 April 2019, the Treaty on friendship, cooperation and partnership between Ukraine and the Russian Federation, committed on 31 may 1997 in Kyiv and ratified by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on 14 January 1998,” reads the draft law.
It also notes that the termination of the Treaty of friendship with Russia “Ukraine free from any liabilities and does not affect any right, obligation or legal situation of Ukraine, resulting from the execution of the Treaty prior to its termination”.
In the document as an explanation of the initiative stated “the armed aggression of Russia against Ukraine”, which is a material breach of the Treaty.
Earlier on Monday, 3 December, President Poroshenko registered in the Verkhovna Rada a draft law on the termination of the Treaty of friendship, cooperation and partnership between Ukraine and Russia.
Before that, foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin said that Ukraine will not sever diplomatic relations with Russia in connection with the attack of Russian troops on Ukrainian ship near Kerch Strait. At the same time, he said, will soon be terminated approximately 40 bilateral treaties with the Russian Federation.
