Biathlon has cut the quota for the Olympic games in 2022

Биатлону урезали квоту на Олимпийские игры 2022 года

The IBU has already expressed disappointment with this decision.

The Executive Committee of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) approved the programme of the winter Games in 2022, which will be held in Beijing.

In addition to the introduction of new disciplines, the IOC has made changes in the number of quotas in several sports. So, in biathlon the number of participants will be reduced from 230 participants (115 men and 115 women) to 210 (105 and 105).

“The international biathlon Union (IBU) is disappointed by the decision of the IOC Executive Board to reduce by 20 athletes quota for the Olympic games in 2022 in Beijing.

IBU understand that this decision is part of a larger reduction program participants in many types and reflects the commitment of the IOC to reduce costs in the Game, but also to achieving gender equality.

Reduction of quotas tells about the step back in big efforts for the development of the IBU biathlon, whose ultimate goal is to attract athletes and coaches to participate in the Games.

Now, the IBU will work on proposals for a new system of quota allocation. Meeting with the national federations on the matter is scheduled for 6 September in the framework of the IBU Congress,” – said in a press release.

In addition to biathlon, changes in the distribution of quotas touched bobsleigh (12 men’s quota went to the women’s tournament), hockey (plus 46 quotas in the women’s section), and ski (minus 41 quota) and speed skating (minus 26).
