According to the law On national security of Ukraine from January 1, 2019, Minister of defense of Ukraine should take a civilian.

President Petro Poroshenko dismissed defense Minister of Ukraine Stepan Poltorak from military service. The head of state wrote in his Twitter on Saturday, September 13.

Poroshenko informed that the General of the army of Ukraine Stepan Poltorak has filed the appropriate report.

“And I accepted it – about dismissal from military service. Appreciate the significant contribution of Stepan Poltorak to the revival of the APU, so I suggested him to lead the defense Department as a civilian Minister,” he said.

According to him, Poltorak remains the entire responsibility for the defense of the country.

Poroshenko added that the law On national security of Ukraine, coordinated with the NATO partners, provides for the possibility to appoint Stepan Poltorak, Minister of civil defense of Ukraine after leaving military service. According to this law, from 1 January 2019 the Minister of defence of Ukraine should take a civilian.

Poroshenko also awarded Stepan Poltorak order of Bogdan Khmelnitsky first class.

As we know, Stepan Poltorak Minister of defense of Ukraine from 14 October 2014.

Earlier it was reported that Stepan Poltorak was not present at the Ministerial meeting of NATO countries in Brussels on October 3-4. Ukrainian Minister sent a letter to the Alliance with a request to allow him to attend the meeting, but received a negative response.

Recall that Hungary blocks meeting in the framework of Ukraine’s cooperation with EU and NATO because of the acceptance by Ukraine of the law on education, which entered into force on 28 September 2017.
