Deripaska filed a lawsuit against the US because of sanctions

Дерипаска подал в суд на США из-за санкций

The businessman demands to abolish the existing sanctions against it the U.S. Treasury, calling himself a “victim of political fight”.

Russian billionaire Oleg Deripaska has appealed on Friday, March 15 in Federal U.S. district court in Washington with the requirement to remove the financial sanctions the U.S. Treasury Department.

In his statement, Mr. Deripaska called himself a victim of the ongoing political struggle, and sanctions − reaction to the alleged intervention of Russia in the U.S. presidential election in 2016.

“I filed a lawsuit against the Ministry of Finance and the office for foreign assets control to protect his good name and to obtain the lifting with me of sanctions that were imposed for purely political reasons, − said the billionaire on his page in social network Instagram on Friday, March 15. − The purpose of my lawsuit is to seek justice”.

After the imposition of sanctions the world’s banks refused to Deripaska in providing loans and other companies ceased to cooperate with him. The total value of assets of the businessman fell to $ 7.5 billion and is now, according to the billionaires list by Bloomberg, about $ 3.9 billion.

Thus, according to Bloomberg, Deripaska is most strongly compared to other Russian businessmen affected by the financial sanctions of the United States.

Until the beginning of 2019, the businessman was the largest shareholder of RUSAL, is the world’s second largest aluminium producer.

In April 2018, the U.S. Treasury imposed sanctions against Deripaska and six other Russian oligarchs, who were accused of having links with the Kremlin and participation “in his snotvornoe activity around the world.”

This led to serious disturbances in the market associated with fears that the needs of the world production of aluminum without RUSAL will not be satisfied. In the result, the price of aluminium peaked in the last seven years.

The market situation stabilized only after the U.S. Treasury Department said that prolonging the period during which other businesses are free to make deals with RUSAL.

At the end of January 2019, the U.S. Treasury has removed part of the sanctions controlled by Deripaska firms RUSAL, En+ group and EuroSibEnergo after the businessman has reduced its stake in these companies.

Justifying the legitimacy of his claim to the U.S. Treasury, Deripaska said in Instagram: “I have devoted 30 years of his life to the creation of companies that have become leading players in the global economy, and I will not allow to destroy what was created by me with such difficulty. If OFAC has evidence that confirms the rumors and innuendo, to which it refers, it is time to present them”.
