The EU approved the amendments to the gas Directive of Nord stream-2

The action of the EU gas Directive will apply to pipelines from third countries, including Nord stream-2.

The Committee of permanent representatives of the member States of the European Union (Coreper) approved amendments to the gas Directive, reported the press service of the EU Council on his Twitter page on Wednesday, February 20.

“The rules of the EU gas market will be applied to pipelines coming from third countries (these include the Nord stream-2). Coreper has just approved an agreement between the EU Council and the European Parliament in the gas Directive”, – stated in the message.

We are talking about compromise amendments. They include tougher requirements for the new project of Gazprom and its European partners – Nord stream-2, but the lock will not.

Recall that there has been a compromise on amendments to the gas Directive became known in early February. German Chancellor Angela Merkel announced that European countries have reached agreement on the question of how to regulate Russian gas pipeline Nord stream-2. One of the proposals agreed upon was that the responsibility for the gas pipelines with third countries, like Russia, lies on the country where the pipeline meets for the first time with the European network.

On 13 February, the EU Council and the European Parliament reached a provisional agreement on a compromise version of the amendments to the gas Directive. Now amendments to the gas Directive will need approval at the Ministerial level of the EU countries and in the European Parliament.

Two branches of Nord stream-2 needs to be built before the end of 2019. They will be held off the coast of Russia through the Baltic sea to Germany. The total capacity of the pipeline is 55 billion cubic meters of gas per year.

Nord stream-2 will bypass transit States – Ukraine, Belarus, Poland and other Eastern European and Baltic countries exclusive economic zones and territorial waters of five countries – Russia, Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Germany. The Nord stream gas-2 plan to deliver 2020.
