Plastic bags are too environmentally unfriendly

Plastic bags, bottles, cups have become a major environmental problem worldwide, according to local authorities.

In Greece from January 1, introduces an environmental tax. This day of disposable plastic bags in supermarkets will be paid, for each package will have to pay 4 cents, according to Prime.

As noted, since 1 January 2019 they will rise to 9 cents.

This is one of the measures to restrict consumption of plastic bags as a major means of environmental pollution. With the New year the government will stimulate recycling and use of reusable bags.

“A plastic bag should go out of our habitual consumption. We aim to change the behaviour of consumers so that they as citizens understand the environmental consequences,” said Deputy environment Sokratis Famellos.

Plastic bags, bottles, cups have become a major environmental problem all over the world — they decompose tens or hundreds of years, causing irreparable harm to marine ecosystems and birds, pollute the sea, beach, forest.

The world’s oceans, scientists estimate that each year falls between 4.8 and 12.7 million tonnes of plastic. According to environmentalists, the Mediterranean sea, “drowning in plastic”, a quarter of fish in the Mediterranean sea may contain small amounts of plastic. Half of the garbage in the sea in Greece is plastic bags.

The amount of the charge from the bottom of the plastic bag 10 times more than its production. Only 1% of plastic bags are recycled.

Disposable bags-“Mikey” in Greece consumes more than double the average in Europe, according to the materials of the Ministry of environmental protection.

According to the EU study from 2010, every year in Greece with a population of about 11 million people have used 242 of the package per person. In 2015, according to the research Institute of retail consumer goods, Greece had already 363 package per person, compared to 175 the EU average.

We will remind, the Kyiv city Council appealed to the Verkhovna Rada, which recommends to prohibit the use and sale of plastic bags on the territory of Ukraine.
