Test of the American rocket engine BE-4, designed to replace the Russian RD-180 failed. It is reported by the manufacturer Blue Origin on Twitter.

“Yesterday we lost a set of test equipment for the fuel system on one of our test stands BE-4. Nothing unusual in the development”, – stated in the message.

However, the extent of the failure of the bench tests are not reported.

At Blue Origin are two of the test stand, a prototype of the BE-4, and plans to create two working rocket engine prototype.

The engine BE-4 must be installed on the new missile Vulcan – the replacement of the old Atlas V. It will run on compressed natural gas and liquid oxygen.

On replacing the RD-180 also works company Aerojet Rocketdyne. Their engine is AR1 can be installed on already used Atlas V.

Recall that in 2014 the U.S. Congress due to the deterioration of relations with Russia has imposed a ban on the use of RD-180 after 2019.

In the summer of 2015, the Pentagon officially announced a competition for the creation of a rocket engine to replace Russian RD-180. Then they noted the “urgent need” to stop using Russian engines to launch military and intelligence satellites.

American Orbital Sciences Corporation, Antares produces also abandoned Soviet rocket engines bought from Russia.

The liquid propulsion RD-180 engines are produced in NPO Energomash in Khimki near Moscow. According to the agreement signed in 1996, Russia committed itself in the framework of a binding contract to ship to the US 50 RD-180 engines and even 51 – as additional options.

To date it has delivered more than 60 engines, each of which reaches 15 million dollars.
