The Commissioner pointed to the need to postpone the adoption of the law on the post-election period.

The Ukrainian Parliament should not consider the language of the law during the election campaign, according to the Council of Europe Commissioner for human rights Dunja Mijatovic. On Tuesday, March 12, according to the European true with reference to the press service of the Council of Europe.

“Discussing any new law or reforming policies on the use of languages, member States of the Council of Europe needs to balance carefully the legitimate aim of the support of the state language and the responsibility to protect and maintain the use of minority languages and preserve cultural diversity,” – said Mijatovic.

The Commissioner noted that different language groups should be effectively involved in the process of developing such laws and policies, and their views should be duly taken into account.

“In the context of the election campaign, such discussions often become polarized and are not conducive to making balanced decisions. I urge the Ukrainian Parliament to postpone the adoption of this important legislation for post-election period” – called Mijatovic.

We note today Parliament began to consider amendments to the language law. While the MPs considered approximately 40 amendments from two thousand.

Recall, the Verkhovna Rada endorsed a basis in the first reading the draft law On ensuring the functioning of Ukrainian as the state language on 4 September 2018.

Later the Committee of the Verkhovna Rada concerning culture and spirituality was removed from the draft law on the state language of the provision on criminal liability.
