In Germany on Friday, 21 December, closed the last mine for the extraction of coal. In a ceremony at the mine Prosper-Haniel in Bottrop in the Federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia, the President of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier stated that the end came “a part of German history,” without which the country itself and its development over the past two centuries would have been unthinkable.
Steinmeier expressed the belief that the Ruhr region will continue to play an important role in the energy mix of Germany. According to him, here, by a dense network of higher education institutions and the numerous initiatives to support the new initiatives created by the Association of research centres and enterprises that will provide in the future, “sustainable development of energy options.”
German President praised the hard and dangerous work of miners. “Men and women were here friends. It was not lost, but since it is so, I don’t fear for the future of the Ruhr region”, – he said. Steinmeier thanked the trade unions, which, together with the state contributed to peaceful and responsible the curtailment of coal production in Germany.
In turn, the Deputy of the official representative of the government of Germany Ulrike Demmer noted that the coal industry in Germany provided industrialization and thereby the prosperity of the country.
