In Tajikistan started the referendum on the amendments to the Constitution. According to them incumbent President Emomali Rahmon will be able to be re-elected on the post unlimited number of times. In addition, the age limit for presidential candidates is reduced to 30 years. Also, it is prohibited the creation of parties on national and religious basis, the financing of parties from abroad, reports the Agency “RIA Novosti”.

In the country at 4:00 began the work of 3.24 thousand polling stations in 68 districts. Also, 36 foreign polling stations opened in 29 countries around the world. The CEC printed 4.3 million ballots in Tajik, Uzbek, Russian and Kyrgyz, which 19 may have been delivered to polling stations. The referendum will be considered valid if more than 50% of voters (50% plus one vote).

Rakhmon has headed Tajikistan since 1994, when the country was a civil war. Since then, he’s re-elected three times: in 1999, 2006 and 2013. In 2003, according to the results of a nationwide referendum, the presidential term was increased from five to seven years, with all the previous cadences Rakhmon set to zero. According to the current Constitution the current presidential term of Rahmon will end in 2020.

If amendments to the current referendum will be approved and the age limit for candidates is reduced from 35 years to 30 years, in 2020, the presidency will be able to run the son of Rahmon, Rustam Emomali. Now the President’s son is only 28 years old. In 2015 he was appointed head of the Agency for state financial control and combating corruption. Only the head of state nine children — seven daughters and two sons.
