The court of justice in the Hague

Naftogaz is required to pay about 67 billion UAH of losses.

International arbitration court has started consideration of the claim of Naftogaz of Ukraine and 6 of its subsidiaries against Russia for compensation caused by illegal seizure of Russian assets of the group in the Crimea. This was reported on the website of the arbitration.

In Naftogaz say that after the illegal invasion of Crimea and the occupation of the Peninsula in 2014, Russia has used massive and well-coordinated scheme of deprivation of Ukrainian companies of their property without compensation. The company requires that Russia has repaid $2.6 billion of losses (about 67 billion UAH).

Naftogaz refers to the rules of the UN Commission on international trade law and the agreement between the governments of Ukraine and Russia of November 27, 1998 on the protection of investments.

In turn Russia in a letter dated 19 January 2017 indicated that they do not recognize the jurisdiction of International arbitration for the settlement of claims of Naftogaz and appointed its representatives in the arbitration process.

Recall that the claim of Naftogaz and its subsidiary companies – Chernomorneftegaz, Ukrtransgaz, of likvo, Ukrgazvydobuvannya, Ukrtransnafta, and Gas of Ukraine – was registered by the court on 17 October 2016.
