The state penitentiary service declares significant increase in the number of prisoners and overcrowding in detention facilities.

In Ukraine increased the number of prisoners, leading to overcrowding in pretrial detention. This was reported in the Public penitentiary service on Friday, April 13.

“Over the last three years there has been a rapid increase in the number of persons held in pretrial detention. In 2016, the total number of persons taken into custody and convicted persons in remand prisons and penal establishments rose from 16 to 19 616 278 people”, – reported in Department.

In particular, in Kiev Lukyanovka jail the prison population increased by 200 people. “This creates difficulties in providing prisoners with adequate conditions, which in some cases leads to a failure to provide all detainees with individual sleeping places”, – added in service.

The Ministry added that in Lukyanovka jail to install additional sleeping places and spend redistribution of certain categories of prisoners on other cameras.

The reasons for the growth in the prison population in the service believes the increase in the number of persons, criminal cases which are in manufacture of courts.

Earlier it was reported that in Nikolaev prison on 8 April, the number of the suspects refused by order of the administration to go in camera.
