Jagland called as soon as possible to lift the ban of the Mejlis in Crimea

The Secretary General of the Council of Europe thorbjørn Jagland called as soon as possible to cancel the ban of the Mejlis in the Crimea, the press service of the Council.

“I am very concerned about the decision taken today by the court of Simferopol, to declare the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people “extremist organization and to ban it,” said the Secretary General.

He said that in the recent report on the situation of human rights in Crimea, said that soon a possible ban of the Mejlis and this situation may entail a new level of repression directed at the Crimean Tatar community, and can also separate the community from the rest of the population of the Peninsula.

“Today, if you follow the court’s decision, this risk is very significant. I therefore call on the relevant authorities to take necessary steps for cancellation of this decision”, – said Jagland.

Today Chubarov declared a state of emergency activities of the Majlis under occupation.

We will remind, today the Supreme court of the annexed Crimea recognized public Association of the Crimean Tatar Mejlis an extremist organization and banned its activities in Russia. The head of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people Refat Chubarov is sure that the international community, including the UN, will soon react to ban the activities of Mejlis in Russia-annexed Crimea.

On 18 April the Ministry of justice of the Russian Federation submitted to the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people to the list of public and religious associations whose activity has been suspended due to implementation of extremist activity.
