Military exercises of the Ukrainian forces of sea protection in the Azov sea

American experts have called Russia’s actions a form of economic warfare and call to give Ukraine a missile.

Ukraine intensifies military presence in the Azov direction. These measures are taken due to “aggressive actions” of Russia, said the Armed forces of Ukraine.

The situation in the Azov sea has escalated after the arrest in March off the coast of Crimea, Ukrainian border guards of the Russian vessel Nord. Russian border guards started to strengthen inspection of ships coming to the Ukrainian territory.

In late August, also raised the question of revising the Contract on the use of the Azov sea and the Kerch Strait, which was signed in 2003. Корреспондент.net tells details.

As Ukraine increases the Azov coast

September 6 of the NSDC of Ukraine decided to strengthen naval presence in the sea of Azov.

“We are talking about strengthening the naval presence in the sea of Azov, the establishment of a ship-the property of the naval force of the APU, the development of appropriate infrastructure, the provision of units of coastal defense latest high-precision missile weapons and so on”, – declared in SNBO.

After two days it became known about the transfer of small armored artillery boats in the sea of Azov. As part of the Navy of Ukraine there are six of these boats: Ackerman, Berdyansk, Dnipropetrovsk, Kremenchuk, Lubny and Nikopol.

Two of them were put into operation in 2016, four in 2018. Engaged in their manufacture shipyard in Kiev Forge on rybalskaya. In 2015, the defense Ministry of Ukraine reported about the intention to 2020 to build Navy boats 18 Gyurza-M.

On 11 September the Ukrainian boat project Gyurza-M Lubny and Kremenchuk came to the service in the water area of port Berdyansk.

“With the goal of strengthening the military presence of the Ukrainian Navy in the sea of Azov and preventing illegal stops of vessels on the part of the aggressor heading to Mariupol and Berdyansk sea ports”, – explained in the Ministry of Infrastructure.

It is expected that by the end of the year in the sea of Azov will be created military-sea base of naval forces of Ukraine by transferring here the southern naval base of Nikolaev, which prior to the annexation of Crimea was in Novoozerne, in the Gulf of Donuzlav. In the future on its basis will be created boat division with the future deployment of forces and means.

In addition, Ukraine’s Armed forces stepped up military presence on the Azov direction.

Conditional attack of the enemy on the sea coast, the Ukrainian army reflects regularly in military exercises in both the Black and the Azov seas.

“The military-political leadership of the Russian Federation considers the Azov-black sea region as an important base for their further military aggression,” – said the NSDC Secretary Oleksandr Turchynov.

For defense against attack from the sea Ukraine holds ready tanks, cannons and rocket artillery. First of all, such exercises are in the area of Operations of the combined forces on the Azov coast.

Russia blocks Ukrainian ports

For several months, Russian border guards are systematically detained for the inspection of the vessel under different flags, the following from the ports of Mariupol and Berdyansk or in the opposite direction.

As the assistant to the Chairman of the state border service of Ukraine Oleg Slobodyan, Russia examines the foreign trade vessels moving in the ports of Ukraine, although it never did.

In may 2018 Russia, completing stroitelstvo automobile part of the bridge Kerch, sent to the sea of Azov and the Kerch Strait three artillery boats – two armored AK-201 AK-248 project 1204 Shmel and one boat AK-326 project 1400M Grif – from the Caspian flotilla of the Russian Navy.

Since then Russia has detained about 150 Ukrainian and foreign merchant ships and interrogated crews and other persons on Board.

The Russian side stressed that did not violate any international treaties.

The Minister of infrastructure Vladimir Omelian said that the cargo traffic of the seaport of Mariupol fell by 10 percent, and Berdyansk – 20 percent.

And in June, according to the Crimea, editor of BlackSeaNews Andrey Klimenko, the ships of the coast guard border service of the Russian Federation, a member of the FSB, in the Azov sea, Russia has sent warships.

“According to our estimates, it now has six artillery boats like bumblebee, brought in from the Caspian flotilla, six or seven small landing ships of the Chamois, is also transferred from the Caspian flotilla of the Russian Federation. Here also two missile corvettes, the Grad Sviyazhsk and the Great Ustyug, armed with missiles of Caliber. It’s the same corvettes, which at the end of 2015 performed the first firing cruise missiles Caliber on Syria,” – said Klimenko.

For decades the Ukraine and Russia argued about the delimitation of the Azov sea, however, the final section of this territory has not occurred. In fact, now the border between the two countries is only on the seabed, not the water.

In 2003, presidents Leonid Kuchma and Vladimir Putin signed an agreement according to which the Azov sea became an internal sea of both countries.

As Ukraine to defend itself

The US special envoy to Ukraine Kurt Volker recently told the Guardian that Washington was ready to offer Ukraine new weapons for protection.

“Without a doubt, the Ukrainian army needs this weapon. Moscow is both a military and economic war against Kiev in the Black and Azov seas. It has blocked Ukrainian ships in both territorial waters, insisting on its right to inspect foreign ships, and expanded marine exclusion zone all the way to Odessa,” writes lead researcher of the American research center American Foreign Policy Council Stephen Blank in an article for the Atlantic Council.

Moscow has the opportunity to conduct amphibious operations on the Ukrainian coast, in order to isolate Mariupol and southern Ukraine. Russian operations should be considered as military coercion and economic warfare at the same time, he said.

Therefore there is an urgent need for the United States has provided new weapons to Ukraine right now, emphasizes the Form.

“First of all, Washington could send Ukraine anti-ship missiles of the US AGM-84 Block II Harpoon (Harpoon) anti-ship long-range missiles AGM-158C LRASM A and the Norwegian missile NSM. But Ukraine also needs a reliable launch platform and the aiming system, in particular radars,” – said the expert.

Another expert of the Atlantic Council, Alexander Vershbow said in an interview with Radio Liberty that the conflict in the sea of Azov – at least form ekonomichnoi war of Russia against Ukraine.

“Undoubtedly, this is a very serious situation only worsened during the summer. This is the minimum form of economic war of Russia against Ukraine, as in fact, a blockade of shipping… It restricts the rights of the Ukrainian fishermen work in the sea of Azov. This deprives the work of thousands of dockers in the ports. So, only as a trade war is having a serious impact on Ukraine”, – he said.
