Ukraine has refused to extradite to Uzbekistan the fugitive journalist, Narzullo Akhunzhanov

A journalist who criticized the government of Uzbekistan, left the country in 2013 due to threats.

Prosecutor General of Ukraine refused to extradite an Uzbek journalist, Narzullo Akhunzhanov, which require the authorities of his country. This was announced by Executive Director of the Ukrainian branch of Amnesty international Oksana Pokalchuk in Facebook.

According to her, Akhunzhanov was released from custody and received official refugee status.

A journalist who criticized the government of Uzbekistan, left the country in 2013 due to threats. He was arrested on 25 September 2017 by the decision of Solomenskiy district court of Kyiv, akhunzhanov when the family arrived in Kiev from Turkey, before asking here for political asylum.

The court decision says that the reason for the arrest was the announcement of Akhunzhanov Uzbekistan on the international wanted list – at the time of extradition check the journalist arrested for forty days. Officially Uzbekistan he was charged with fraud in the amount of two thousand dollars, allegedly committed in 2009.

Earlier, Uzbekistan announced the possible introduction of sanctions against Ukraine due to the introduction of “repressive regulations against goods of foreign origin on its territory”.
