Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin said talks with the Egyptian side concerning the possible release of the Ukrainian Edward Chikosh, who was convicted in Egypt in 2012, he said this while interacting with the press, which was broadcast channel “112 Ukraine”.

“I am now in contact with his Egyptian colleague, and we agreed that we are currently developing an Agreement on mutual legal assistance. On the basis of this agreement we will make all attempts (Chikosh – ed.) to release. Unfortunately, this case is indeed complex because the Egyptian authorities accuse him of smuggling weapons. For the government of Egypt is very serious, but what we do at the level of the President of Ukraine, who was talking in the framework of the UN General Assembly with Egyptian President… I have spoken several times with the Minister (the Egyptian – ed.), I hope we will be able to reach this agreement and under this agreement to take additional steps in order to release him. But the negotiations are really difficult”, – said Klimkin.

As reminds “Interfax”, on 20 and 22 October 2011, the competent authorities of Egypt have detained two citizens of Ukraine, representatives of tourist firms, on suspicion of smuggling weapons.

November 1 one of the detainees – a citizen of Ukraine – was released. Meanwhile, the Egyptian newspaper “al Ahram” wrote that the police of Egypt has indicted a citizen of Ukraine and two Israelis with smuggling weapons and ammunition into the country through the border with Israel. According to the newspaper, Ukrainian, worked as a Manager of the tourist company in Sharm El-Sheikh, had ordered the gun from the Israelite mA’mun al-Alimi. A second Israeli, Zuhair Sachlage living in Eilat, smuggled weapons into the territory of Egypt. Ukrainian and Z. Sachlage already in custody, while mA’mun al-Alimi is still on the loose in Israel.

March 12, 2012, the court of the Egyptian city of Ismail Chikosh sentenced to 25 years in prison for arms smuggling through the Israeli-Egyptian border. As reported, in addition to citizen of Ukraine to a similar term of imprisonment was sentenced two citizens of Israel. In addition to 25 years of imprisonment, convicted offenders must pay a fine in the amount of 50 thousand Egyptian pounds.
