Latvia assesses the damage from drought in the 359 million euros

Losses Latvian farmers from an extended drought this summer, according to preliminary data, amount to 359 million euros. As stated in the official notification benzamidine the European Commission, the amount of damage will be updated in the fall.

Due to prolonged drought in the spring and early summer the development of crops was delayed throughout the territory of Latvia. In particular, the hay this year collected 54% less than the average for the last 3 years, while its quality is worse. Therefore, additional costs for harvested forages this year may amount to 100.5 million euros, which is 80% more than in the previous three years on average.

According to forecasts benzamidine, revenues of grain and oilseed rape this year may be to 137,2 million Euro, or 27%, compared with average incomes for the previous three years. Income from sale of fruits, berries, vegetables and potatoes can fall by 28.4 million euros (44%).

Damage to forests due to fires that were caused by drought, yet is estimated at 92.9 million euros.

Earlier it was reported that the farmers of Germany in connection with large-scale drought can count on compensation from the authorities.
