Latvia has recognized the deportation of Crimean Tatars genocide

Латвия признала депортацию крымских татар геноцидом

The Saeima has recognized the deportation of Crimean Tatars in 1944 a genocide. The Parliament also condemned the current policy of the Russian Federation concerning the Crimean Tatars.

The Latvian Parliament recognized the 1944 deportation as genocide against the Crimean Tatar people. The corresponding statement, the Seimas adopted on the occasion of 75 years of the deportation of Crimean Tatars by the Soviet authorities. On the evening of Thursday, may 9, reports Delfi.

The statement of the Saeima notes that “in General, historical sources point to purposefully carry out the genocide of the Soviet regime against many peoples and ethnic groups living in the Soviet Union. In particular, and against the Crimean Tatars as an ethnic group, to destroy its culture and social heritage, the historical identity of the people of the territory of the Crimean Peninsula and surviving the Crimean Tatars from their homeland”.

The Saeima reminds that Russia five years ago, illegally annexed the Crimea and denounces Moscow’s policy towards the Crimean Tatars.

“Those Crimean Tatars who refuse to take Russian citizenship and do not recognize the illegal annexation of Crimea, face discrimination. They are forbidden access to education, health services, it is forbidden to use native language, maintain the traditions and culture. It is inconceivable that the Crimean Tatars for the second time in 75 years violently oppressed and persecuted. History could repeat itself”, – said the Chairman of the Seimas Committee on foreign Affairs Rihards kols.

We will remind, the Commission of the diet of Latvia on foreign Affairs had earlier supported the draft decision on the basis of the report of the foreign Ministry, regarding the Soviet Union. We are talking about the document, which States that Latvia considers the deportation of Crimean Tatars in 1944 a genocide by the Soviet Union.

We will remind, Ukraine has recognized the genocide of the Crimean Tatars in 2015.

And in may 2016, the Verkhovna Rada called on the international community to recognize the genocide of the Crimean Tatars.
