Naftogaz has to keep in Ukrainian gas storage in Hungary

Ukraine is ready to offer its underground storage facilities for gas injection for Hungary in case of stoppage of transit Russia.

Naftogaz of Ukraine is ready to help Hungary with gas in case of Russia stops transit 2020. This was reported in the press service of Ukrtransgaz, commenting on the signing of the contract of Budapest and the Russian Federation on gas supply without Ukraine.

“Ukrtransgas invites the European gas suppliers to use free capacities of Ukrainian UGS and create the necessary additional reserves of gas in storage to ensure uninterrupted gas supply of consumers of Hungary and avoid potential threats to the energy security of the EU during the passage of the next autumn-winter period 2019-2020”, – stated in the message.

Each year Hungary consumes more than 10 billion cubic meters of gas.

“Now this need more than two-thirds is provided by Russian gas, which enters Hungary through the Ukrainian GTS (GIS Berehove), about 20% of domestic production and the rest imported from Austria. To cover the peak demand of the Hungarian consumers use the power of underground natural gas storage facilities in Hungary with total capacity of 6 billion cubic meters”, – said the Naftogaz.

The NAC noted that about 60% of Russian gas, which arrives in the Austrian gas hub in Baumgarten is also transported through Ukrainian GTS – GIS Uzhgorod.

“Based on the foregoing, the Ukrainian underground gas storage facilities can help Hungary to provide uninterrupted gas supply for next winter for its domestic consumers, even if Russia stops gas transit through Ukraine to the EU after 01.01.2020” – said the NAC.

Now Ukraine can offer to the European customers of about 12 billion cubic meters of storage capacity, and the maximum daily capacity of extraction from UGS can reach up to 260 million cubic meters.

“Technical possibility of gas exports to Hungary is 68 million cubic metres per day, which is four times the performance of the gas transportation corridor from Austria to Hungary (only 15 million cubic meters/day). The use of such large capacities of the Ukrainian GTS will significantly reduce risks of occurrence of emergency situations in gas transportation system of Hungary”, – noted in the Naftogaz.

The company added that the same services and the capacity of the Ukrainian side is ready to offer suppliers from other countries in Central and Eastern Europe.

We will note, earlier the head of Naftogaz Andrey KOBOLEV has revealed a plan for stopping the transit of Russian gas in 2020. According to him, to be sure, this year needs to be pumped into underground storage facilities of three billion cubic meters of gas, increasing the amount to $ 20 billion.
