Yakov Smoliy told about work of banks with a possible martial law

The national Bank does not see risks to the smooth operation of the banking sector in case of imposition of martial law.

The banking system of Ukraine is ready to the smooth operation in conditions of martial law. This was stated by the Chairman of the National Bank Yakov Smoliy at an extraordinary meeting of the Board of the NBU with heads of 40 largest banks in the country on Monday, November 26, the press service of the regulator.

“The national Bank does not see risks to the smooth operation of the banking sector in case of imposition of martial law. The liquidity of the banking sector is approximately 75 billion UAH, which is sufficient for its proper and smooth functioning”, – said resin.

According to him, the national Bank has no grounds for the imposition of administrative measures in the monetary and currency markets.

“If necessary, banks may use, as before, the standard tools of liquidity support and the tool of emergency liquidity assistance, ELA. We also continue to monitor closely developments in the foreign exchange market and willing to carry out currency interventions if necessary to prevent sudden “surges” of course, under pressure from psychological factors. The National Bank has enough resources to do this and tools. Now the volume of international reserves reaches 17.8 billion dollars”, – said the head of the NBU.

In addition, the Board of the national Bank encouraged market participants to exert maximum effort to ensure that the banking sector in operation and minimizing possible risks in conditions of martial law.

Earlier it became known that the national Bank of Ukraine on Monday, 26 November, immediately gathers the heads of the country’s largest banks in connection with the possible introduction of martial law.

We will remind, on November 25, the Russian special forces attacked the ships of the Ukrainian Navy in the sea of Azov. In the Kerch bridge was captured three Ukrainian vessel.

In connection with the worsening situation, held an emergency meeting of the national security Council, which President Petro Poroshenko had proposed to introduce martial law in Ukraine. The head of state supported the initiative.
