On the surface of the planet Neptune formed a storm the size of Earth, the existence of which scientists can not yet explain. This is stated in the message of the planetary scientists on the website of the University of California at Berkeley.

“The opening of such a big storm was a big surprise for us. Usually, these regions are very calm, before we saw the bright clouds only in the high latitudes of Neptune, and so the discovery of giant hurricane at the equator of the planet has become so interesting for us”, say the researchers.

The gas giant Jupiter has a notable feature – the Great red spot – a hurricane-high in length 40 thousand kilometers of wind which move at incredibly high speed of about 430 kilometers per hour.

Until relatively recently, such structures were considered a unique feature of the first of the giant planet of the Solar system.

But in 1994, scientists noticed a similar structure on Neptune. One of these hurricanes was named the Great dark spot.

Recently, scientists from Berkeley, watching Neptune in the wee hours, noticed on its surface is a giant bright spot of light, indicating the emergence of powerful storms in tropical and Equatorial latitudes.

In the following days the brightness only increased, and the boundaries of the storm “swelled” up to nine thousand kilometers, which is about 1.5 times the Earth’s radius and only three times less than the diameter of Neptune.

The nature of this hurricane is not yet clear. According to astronomers from Berkeley, a long time of its existence indicates that under the spot light is a giant funnel, pumping the dense gas from the depths of Neptune in the rarefied upper layers of its atmosphere.

The problem is that the existence of such a funnel it is impossible to explain.

Earlier, the chief hunter for exoplanets, the orbital telescope Kepler, was distracted from the observation of distant stars and for 70 days continuously followed by Neptune and its satellites that have enabled scientists to prepare a 30-second video of their cosmic dance.
