President Barack Obama has increased the area of the marine reserve of Paranomasia in the Hawaiian Islands four times, making it the largest in the world. This is stated in the White house, writes the BBC.

Now the waters of the marine reserve, founded in 2006 by George W. Bush, is 582 578 sq miles (1.5 million sq km), which is more than two times the size of Texas.

The status of the reserve bans commercial fishing and mining.

The decision aims to protect more than 7 thousand species of living beings.

Coastal waters, within the waters of the reserve also considered a sacred place by the indigenous inhabitants of the Islands.

Executive Vice President of the environmental organization the Pew Charitable Trusts Joshua Reichert called them one of the most valuable in the biological and cultural sites on Earth.

Greenpeace considered Obama’s decision a courageous act.
