The effects of explosions in Kalinovka in 2017

Only in the last four years, Ukraine has already burned four warehouses with ammunition. Power after each case promise to make conclusions, but all hands do not reach.

Fires and explosions at munitions depots are no longer a rarity for Ukraine. A year ago this occurred in Vinnytsia region, now in Chernigov.

While at military depots in Ichnya district of continuing explosions, evacuated people sleeping on mats in gyms, and SBU is looking for spies, Correspondent.net recalls previous incidents of explosions in military warehouses in Ukraine.

Kalinovka – 2017

In the evening of 26 September 2017 in Kalinovka, which is 30 kilometers from Vinnitsa, explosions began in a military warehouse.

The explosions continued for several days without a break, in Kalinovka and the surrounding area later gathered about a thousand duds.

From the area of possible danger were evacuated about 30 thousand people.

All officials almost in unison spoke of “external factors” and Subversion as the main version of the origin of tragedy. Not without version with a “hostile drone”.

In October 2017, the General Prosecutor Yuriy Lutsenko said that the main version of the investigation about the fire at the ammunition depot in Kalynivka is a diversion.

Later, the chief trial examiner in this case the Chairman of the Kyiv research Institute of forensic examinations, Alexander ruvin in Parliament spoke about the details of explosions. According to him, the explosions began in multiple places:

“There were several explosions in different period … the Most powerful explosions had two big store with a Tulip and a bunker with a Hurricane. The hopper is completely closed and concrete, to go outside very difficult.”

Balakliia – 2017

Explosions at an ammunition depot in Balakleya in Kharkiv region began in the night of March 23, 2017.

The total area of the military Arsenal in balakliia – 368 hectares. According to various estimates, it contains about 150,000 tons of ammunition from small caliber anti-aircraft missiles. The fire detonated ammunition. The cannonade continued for several days. Rescuers managed to localize the fire only on the morning of March 26.

Defense Minister Stepan Poltorak said that the fire in warehouses in Balakleya in Kharkiv region were destroyed 70% of ammunition.


In fact, explosions of ammunition in Balakleya SBU opened criminal proceedings under article “diversion”. It soon became known that, according to the investigation, this diversion was accomplished by the use of unmanned aerial vehicles.

About the dead and injured in the incident in Balakleya were not reported. In the explosions were organized large-scale evacuation of local residents – all evacuated about 20 thousand people.

Completely clean the area Blakley and nearby communities caught in the disaster zone from explosives rescuers managed only by 18 April 2017.

The Minister of internal Affairs Arsen Avakov called explosions in Balakleya planned terrorist attack and blamed it in Russia.

Defence Minister even dismissed the Colonel, who was responsible for the storage of ammunition in Balakliya, but he recovered through the courts.


First during the war in the Donbass case of large-scale fire at the ammunition depot, accompanied by their detonation, there was a fire in Svatovo, Luhansk oblast that occurred on 29 October 2015.

On the territory of this military warehouse, there were about 3.5 thousand various modifications.

Had to evacuate more than a third of the population of the city, damaging over 200 buildings and 5 people were killed: four soldiers and 1 civilian.

Though the initial fire was called a terrorist attack, and defence Minister Stepan Poltorak claimed that this incident occurred as a result of enemy action, November 10, 2015 the chief military Prosecutor Anatoly Matios said that the cause of the fire at the ammunition depot in Svatovo was the negligence of officials, “in particular, the head of this warehouse.”

A year svatovsky district court found guilty the tragedy of the soldier who was responsible for the conditions of storage of shells in the warehouse. It turned out that the fire occurred due to the ignition boxes.

The accused major was awarded almost 8 months, disciplinary battalion, but for the “law Savchenko” was released immediately after the court hearing.

More old events

In 2003 blew up a military warehouse in Artemovsk (Bakhmut now) in Donetsk region. Then exploded around 3 thousand shells. The explosion injured two people, damaged 66 houses 120 private houses, 5 schools and 3 hospitals.

The cause of the fire was that just in the warehouse of projectiles cut metal rails for sale. Chief of staff and chief of service of missile and artillery weapons parts received 8 years of imprisonment.

In Novobohdanivka in Zaporizhia region military warehouses burned not once, not twice. Incidents were recorded in 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007.

The most critical situation was in 2004. Warehouses in novobogdanovke stored charges to all types of artillery used by the armed forces. Including to the reactive systems of salvo fire “Smerch” and “Uragan”, whose range is 70 kilometers.

In the zone of probable destruction was a big tank farm, pipeline, railway and road. 40 kilometers from Novobohdanivka, the largest in Europe Zaporizhia nuclear power plant. Within a few days, the government and the military could only watch the extraordinary event, because to come to the scene or to start work was impossible.

As it became known later that the base had been significantly overloaded, it kept the 800 “extra” cars with ammunition. To extinguish the fire was only 13 days. As a result of the tragedy killed 5 people, about a hundred were hospitalized with various injuries, 22 families were left homeless. With a 10-mile radius of scattering of shells temporarily resettled nearly 4,000 people. The loss was estimated at nearly 4 billion hryvnias.

In August 2008, the shells exploded already in Lozova Kharkiv region.

The explosions destroyed 129 of the 134 storage locations of the shells. Due to fire on August 28 exploded and gas distribution station. Explosions of ammunition continued until 11 September. Human victims managed to be avoided.

The defense Ministry said that the cause of the detonation of the shells was heat and forest fire, which spread to the military unit. But later, the court found guilty of the tragedy chief of the military of Alexei Polyakov and his Deputy Alexander Zaika. They removed the landfill near the warehouse where the fire started. Both the military quickly released under the Amnesty.
