Epiphany, or Theophany comes from the Orthodox Christians on Friday, January 19. It is dedicated to the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist in the Jordan river.

Friday, January 19, Eastern rite Christians celebrate Epiphany, or Epiphany.

This holiday commemorates the baptism of Jesus Christ in the river Jordan.The word “baptize” literally in Greek means “immersed in water”. Baptized Christ, the prophet John immediately recognized him as the Savior expected by the Jewish people.

According to legend, when Jesus came out of the water, he was in the form of a dove the Holy spirit descended and a voice from heaven testified about him as the son of God.

Hence the second name of the holiday – Epiphany, because believers are convinced, that people that God appeared in three persons: the father speaking from heaven, the son Christ and the Holy spirit in the form of a dove.

According to the gospel story, after his baptism, Jesus Christ, guided by the Spirit, went into the desert, in solitude, prayer and fasting to prepare for the execution of the mission with which he came to earth.
