The representative on freedom of the media is concerned about the intention to introduce sanctions against Ukraine 112 TV channels and NewsOne.

The OSCE representative on freedom of the media, Harlem Desir reacted to the decision of the Verkhovna Rada with a request to impose sanctions against Ukraine 112 TV channels and NewsOne, reports TASS.

“I would like to reiterate that freedom of expression and freedom of the media – the fundamental obligations of States parties of the OSCE, which should be respected and implemented,” said Desir.

According to him, “any restrictions on these rights, including in the name of protecting national security or countering the propaganda should be strictly limited in scope, proportionate and provide adequate safeguards against abuse through an independent judicial system.”

“I am deeply concerned about any future decision on the withdrawal or blocking of potential regular functioning of the media in Ukraine. I call on the Ukrainian authorities to refrain from taking a disproportionately restrictive measures against the media without due process, because it will have a negative impact on free access to information and discourages the expression of diverse opinions,” – said the OSCE representative.

As reported, on the eve of the Rada recommended that the national security Council to impose sanctions against companies that are included in the ownership structure of the channels 112 Ukraine and NewsOne.

112 Ukraine declare that a petition for sanctions indicates a serious threat to freedom of speech and independence of media.

The national security Council said that the appeal of Parliament to the imposition of sanctions applies only to founders of TV channels.
