In the parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe during debates on the Ukrainian prisoners in connection with Russia’s aggression, which was broadcast “112 Ukraine” was proposed to introduce personal sanctions against persons involved in illegal abductions, arrests and opinions of Ukrainians by the Russian authorities on trumped-up charges. With the corresponding initiative was made by PACE Rapporteur on the humanitarian aspects and the missing people during the conflict in Ukraine, the Deputy from Latvia Nellija Kleinberga.

In particular, she mentioned the trial of a Ukrainian MP and PACE member Nadiya Savchenko.

“The proposed members of the Council of Europe to impose targeted sanctions, particularly travel bans and freezing of accounts in respect of the persons involved in the abduction, unlawful deduction and unjust trial of Nadezhda Savchenko. Similar measures should be considered in relation to the case 20 other Ukrainian prisoners held by Russian authorities on trumped-up charges,” said Kleinberga.

The theme of Hope Savchenko also raised the member of the Assembly John Kovel.

“The report correctly highlights the case of Nadia Savchenko, who is a member of this Assembly. The report States that there is international concern on both sides of the Atlantic that her release by the Russian authorities and we continue to encourage and until it is rejected. I hope that the Assembly will support these calls,” added Kovel.

At the same time Kleinberga said “great job” done by the Ukrainian government and public organizations, volunteers, to free 3015 prisoners captured since April 2014.

“However, 123 people are still in captivity by the separatists, but 693 is still missing”, she added.
