The head of state reacted to the decision of the Ecumenical Patriarchate

The government will respect the choice of those who decide to remain in the Church structure that will preserve the unity with the Russian Orthodox Church.

The issue of granting Ukraine the Tomos of autocephaly is the question of the independence of the state and its national security. This was stated by President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko at a briefing on Thursday evening, October 11.

“The question of the Tomos of autocephaly and goes far beyond Church life. Therefore, the joined state. It is a question of our independence. It is a question of our national security. It is a question of our statehood. This is the question the entire world of geopolitics,” – said the President.

He added that the decision of the Synod on the granting of autocephaly to Ukraine means “the fall of the Third Rome as an ancient concept application of Moscow for world domination”.

“Autocephaly is part of our statist Pro-European and Pro-Ukrainian strategy, which we consistently implement in the last catrice years and, I emphasize, will continue in the future”, – said Poroshenko.

The President noted that the government will respect the choice of those who decide to remain in the Church structure that will preserve the unity with the Russian Orthodox Church. “But also guarantee that the state will protect the rights of those priests and laity of the UOC-MP who voluntarily decide to get out of Moscow, together with other Orthodox to create a Unified Ukrainian local Orthodox Church”, – said Poroshenko.

He added that a group of bishops of the UOC-MP supported the appeal to the Ecumenical Patriarch to grant autocephaly: “They withstood the pressure, blackmail, threats and intimidation, but applied their signatures to the Ecumenical Patriarch. And it must be admitted.”

Earlier District administrative court of Kyiv has accepted for consideration the claim Poroshenko on appeal to the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew on the granting of the autocephaly of the Orthodox Church in Ukraine.
