Ukraine is in NATO, not with empty hands, and offers the Alliance one of the strongest armies on the continent, the President said.

Fixation in the Constitution of the course to join NATO and the EU is a signal not only for the Ukrainian society on the firmness of intentions, but the message of Western partners.

This was stated by President Petro Poroshenko in Kiev on the 15th annual meeting of the Yalta European Strategy (YES), UKRINFORM reported on Friday, September 14.

“It’s not just a signal to society about the commitment… It’s a message to our Western partners: you have already told us that the doors are open. At a closed meeting of the NATO summit all the leaders of the European Union is firmly emphasized: “Mr. President, the NATO doors are open for you”. And we never doubted it, frankly. We are sure it will be done and we will definitely return to the big family of European Nations”, – said Poroshenko.

He added that European and Euro-Atlantic aspirations of Ukraine should be considered in a broader global and European context.

“Not only we need the European Union and not only we need NATO. Exactly as we needed them. Not only NATO will give us effective security guarantees, but we are with our new army… significantly strengthen the Eastern flank of NATO”, – says Poroshenko.

He added that Ukraine is in Alliance not with empty hands, and de facto offers this defensive unit one of the strongest armies on the continent.

Earlier it was reported that on 5 September, the Committee on national security of the Verkhovna Rada supported the draft law of the President of Petro Poroshenko on amendments to the Constitution in the matter of fixing of a course of Ukraine on joining NATO and the EU.

In the Parliament changes to the Constitution plan to consider before the end of September.
