Kiev counts on the support of the European institutions in further integration in the EU

Ukraine considers today’s decision as a powerful incentive for continued reforms.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko counts on the support of the European Union on the question of further EU integration. He stated this at a meeting with EU Commissioner for neighbourhood policy and enlargement negotiations Johannes Hahn, reports the press service of the President.

“Ukraine considers today’s decision (recommendations on visa regime – ed.) as a powerful incentive for continuing the reforms and counts on the support of the European Union and the European institutions as a relatively speedy introduction of visa-free regime, and further integration of Ukraine into the EU,” said Poroshenko.

During the conversation the President of Ukraine expressed hope for the soonest approval of the relevant proposal by the EU Council and the European Parliament and the introduction of visa-free regime between Ukraine and the EU in the second half of this year.

Poroshenko expressed confidence that Ukraine’s withdrawal from the political crisis opens up new opportunities to accelerate reforms in line with Ukraine’s commitments to the International monetary Fund, in the framework of the Association Agreement with the EU, including a deep and comprehensive free trade area, for the implementation of the Minsk agreements and the effective implementation of anti-corruption policy.

In turn, Khan has called the Ukraine’s progress in legislative changes for the introduction of a visa-free regime with the EU “a fine example of remarkable cooperation between President, government and Parliament”.

“All three institutions have worked closely together and this gave the opportunity to achieve a good result”, – said the Commissioner and added that “such cooperation is absolutely necessary for successful implementation of reforms.”

As reported, on 20 April the European Commission invited the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union to cancel visas for Ukrainian citizens.
