Petro Poroshenko met with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg. The parties discussed ways to enhance Ukraine’s cooperation with the Alliance.

President Petro Poroshenko met with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in the framework of the Munich security conference. About it reports a press-service of the head of state.

Poroshenko thanked NATO for the consolidated support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine. The head of state highly appreciated the practical large-scale NATO assistance in reforming the security sector and defense of Ukraine in accordance with the standards of the Alliance.

The President of Ukraine stressed the immutability of the course of Euro-Atlantic integration of Ukraine, enshrined in the Constitution. The Secretary-General commended the decision and affirmed that the Alliance continues to pursue a policy of open doors.

In addition, parties also discussed ways to enhance Ukraine’s cooperation with NATO in response to the existing threats in the Black and Azov seas, in particular with the aim of strengthening the capacity of the Ukrainian Navy. In particular, they noted the importance of the expected visit to Ukraine by the North Atlantic Council of NATO, which must also demonstrate continued support for NATO’s Ukraine.

Earlier it was reported that Jens Stoltenberg on the sidelines of the Munich conference on security issues held a meeting with the Minister of foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov. Stoltenberg said that he personally asked Lavrov to release Ukrainian sailors and ships.

It became known yesterday that NATO intends to increase its military presence in the Black sea. Germany also assured of the readiness to ensure the presence of the naval forces of the Bundeswehr in the Black sea.
