Poroshenko: Negotiations on the Cathedral 5 times came to a standstill

Порошенко: Переговоры о проведении Собора 5 раз заходили в тупик

Patriarch Bartholomew confirmed that the Tomos of the Ukrainian Church will be awarded on 6 January, Christmas Eve in Ukrainian, said Poroshenko.

The President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko at the press-conference, 16 December, talked about the difficulties that preceded the holding of a unifying Council of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

“We had at least 5 cases when negotiating the Cathedral came to a standstill. And he found a solution with my participation… When someone wanted to leave the Cathedral and thought of the way out there, the Lord God during our conversation repent,” – said Poroshenko.

He also said that was late for the press conference because of a telephone conversation with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew.

According to Poroshenko, Bartholomew believes the 15 December in Kiev unification Council a turning point in the history of the Ecumenical Orthodoxy.

“The Ecumenical Patriarch believes that our Cathedral at all was a turning point in the history of the Ecumenical Orthodoxy and opens a new era,” he said.

He also said that Patriarch Bartholomew confirmed that the Tomos of the Ukrainian Church will be awarded on January 6th, the Ukrainian Christmas Eve.

“This will be the most remarkable Christmas in the history of Ukraine”, – said Poroshenko.

The President also expressed the opinion that the Cathedral came only two hierarchs of the UOC-MP instead of 10, which stated the intention, because of the pressure.

“From more than 10 bishops who signed the appeal to the Ecumenical Patriarch or promised to come to the Cathedral, came just two. It is the result of pressure, and certainly not our state,” he said.

Poroshenko added that opposition from the Russian Orthodox Church was for Ukraine to be expected.

“But we underestimated its influence on the subsidiaries in Ukraine”, – he said.

We will remind that on December 14 unification Council elected Metropolitan of Pereyaslav and Belotserkovsky Epiphanius for the post of Primate of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Ukraine.
