Poroshenko stressed the importance of establishing a local Orthodox Church

The President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko during the meeting with representatives of the Ukrainian Council of churches and religious organizations noted the importance of establishing a local Orthodox Church. About it reported in a press-service of the head of the Ukrainian state.

“In the conditions of hybrid war, when Ukraine is opposed to military aggression of the neighboring state, our enemies are trying to use the religious factor to their advantage. And most importantly spiritual weapons of our victory, afraid of what the enemy is our unity. The attack is aimed, primarily, to divide our country and undermine it from inside,” stressed the head of state.

The President noted that despite international support for the struggle of Ukraine against the aggressor, the victory depends on Ukrainians themselves – their faith and effort.

Poroshenko stressed that the society requires all state agencies to work for unity and looked forward to it from religious organizations.

“Obviously, in the current situation many believers find it difficult to agree with the current separation of Ukrainian Orthodoxy. Of course, I fundamentally do not allow the state to intervene and I will not allow – in international relations. It’s a matter of believers and churches. But you can’t ignore the will of the people is also not unseemly, as well as to avoid unacceptable interference in these processes of another country”, – said the President. The head of state expressed readiness to help implement the solutions proposed by the primates of the Ukrainian churches.

The President stressed that opinion polls show that a growing number of Orthodox citizens of Ukraine want to have – as is the custom throughout the Orthodox world and the Orthodox majority countries is one local Autocephalous Church – “the Church, the Eucharistic prayer and the joint is very important and is administratively independent from other States.”

We will remind, on April 23, Poroshenko met with members of the Ukrainian Council of churches.
