Ukraine cannot abandon nuclear energy, said President Petro Poroshenko during his speech at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, reports 112 Ukraina.

“The Chernobyl nuclear power plant we decommissioned at the end of the last century, but the problem of consequences of the accident still remains open. They put a heavy burden on the shoulders of the Ukrainian people, and we are still very far, unfortunately, from their end,” he said.

Poroshenko believes that a key priority in the field of nuclear energy should be tough and effective measures for nuclear security.

“It is clear that neither today nor tomorrow Ukraine, diversifying energy supply, and fighting for energy independence, will not be able to abandon nuclear power. But at the same time, we must think about new technologies and about new alternatives and traditional energy sources and increasing energy efficiency,” – said the President.
