Deputies renamed assault troops

Highly mobile airborne troops of the Armed Forces of Ukraine will now be called assault troops APU. The abbreviation VDV evoked negative associations with the Russian army.

The Verkhovna Rada has amended some laws of Ukraine on defense of the airborne assault troops. The draft law No. 7330 was supported by 236 deputies at the meeting on Thursday, April 5.

The law changes the name of the armed forces with “airborne forces” (airborne) “Airborne assault troops”.

As noted in the explanatory Memorandum to the bill, the adoption of the law due to the events connected with the occupation of the armed forces of the Russian Federation of the territory of Ukraine, which resulted in negative attitude of the personnel and veterans of the Marines by the name of VDV (airborne troops) along with the VDV (airborne forces) of the aggressor.

“Given the above, it is considered appropriate to change the name of high-mobile landing armies of Armed forces of Ukraine for the Airborne assault troops of the Armed forces of Ukraine”, – stated in the note.

Recall, the document in the Parliament made by the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko in November last year.
