Klaus Iohannis canceled an official visit to Ukraine of the law “On education”.

Romanian President Klaus Iohannis canceled an official visit to Ukraine from the Verkhovna Rada adopted the law “On education”. On Thursday, September 21, UKRINFORM reports with reference to the statement Iohannis at a press conference in new York before leaving for Bucharest.

“I made the decision to cancel the visit to Ukraine after he learned about the adopted law “On education”. I also canceled announced at the end of September a meeting with the head of the Verkhovna Rada”, – said the President of Romania.

Johannis noted that the October visit to Ukraine was prepared very carefully, however, he was “unpleasantly surprised” by the fact that the Verkhovna Rada “without prior discussions with the partners of Ukraine”, still adopted a law which severely restricts the rights of national minorities to study in their native language.

He also reminded that Ukraine is home to about 400 thousand Romanians.

As reported Корреспондент.neton 5 September the Verkhovna Rada adopted the law, which begins the education reform in Ukraine. This document, in particular, specifies that the language of the educational process in educational institutions is the only state language. The languages of national minorities, including Russian, will be studied only till the fifth grade, but in 2020 this rule will not be education in Ukraine will be Ukrainian as a whole.
