Ships of Ukraine have right for free passage in the Black and Azov seas, and the use of force against them was unfounded, according to NATO

Russia had no grounds to use force against Ukrainian ships in the Kerch Strait. On Tuesday, 4 December, said a spokeswoman for the NATO meeting of foreign Ministers of member countries of NATO in Brussels, reports UNIAN.

“I’m not going to go into the legal aspects of how and where occurred the capture of a Ukrainian ship. According to NATO, force was used by Russia for no good reason,” she said.

NATO also stressed that the ships of Ukraine and other countries have a right to free passage in the Black and Azov seas.

In turn, the NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that NATO countries are ready to support Ukraine in case of open invasion of the Russian Federation.

“Ukraine is not a NATO member, but we strongly support the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine. We also call on Russia to free the sailors and the ships that they captured. NATO allies will also continue to help modernise and strengthen the Ukrainian Armed forces. NATO is also helping to modernize the Ukrainian fleet,” he said.

Earlier it was reported that 4-5 December in Brussels, foreign Ministers of NATO countries will discuss the response to the situation in the Kerch Strait.

The evening of 25 November the Kerch bridge, the Russian special forces seized three Ukrainian ships. As a result, were wounded six Ukrainian soldiers.

The foreign Ministry of Ukraine said that Russia started the war against Ukraine in international waters.

Russia calls Ukraine’s actions in the Kerch Strait “provocative”. The Russian foreign Ministry handed a protest note to the chargé d’affaires of Ukraine.
