Russia may withdraw from the WTO because of the claim of the European Union

Россия может выйти из ВТО из-за иска Евросоюза

The Meeting Of The Federation Council

The Russian Senator noted that the introduction of European Union sanctions against Russia is completely contrary to the principles of the WTO.

The first Deputy head of the economic Committee of the Federation Council of the Russian Federation Sergey Kalashnikov said that Russia may withdraw from the world trade organization (WTO) in case the claim of the European Union, RIA Novosti reported.

We will remind, earlier it became known that the European Union intends to collect from Russia of 1.39 billion euros a year because of the restrictions on the import of pork. The WTO has already sent the requirement of Brussels to the court of arbitration.

“In the case of the claim of the European Union we, probably, will have to limit its participation in the world trade organization, and possibly completely,” − said Kalashnikov.

The Senator stressed that the introduction of the EU sanctions against Russia and the retaliatory embargo on food supplies from the EU is completely contrary to the principles of the WTO.

The Rosselkhoznadzor since 30 January 2014 banned in Russia pork products from EU countries in connection with the outbreak of African swine fever in Lithuania and Poland. The EU called the ban disproportionate and sent a request to the WTO with a request to form an expert group to settle the dispute.

In August 2016, the WTO ruled that the ban of Russia on import of European pork is contrary to the Agreement on the application of sanitary and phytosanitary measures of the organization. Russia has filed an appeal against this decision, but in February 2017, the WTO rejected it.
