Scientists are concerned about melting ice in the Arctic

Ученые обеспокоены таянием льдов в Арктике

The Arctic ice is getting smaller

This winter the temperatures around the Arctic ocean was four degrees higher than usual. After a couple of years, many seas of the Arctic ocean will be completely ice free in the summer.

Norwegian scientists studying climate change in the Arctic, their concern over the fact that the Arctic is rapidly freed of ice even in winter, according to Norwegian broadcaster NRK.

Lars Smedsrud, Professor, University of Bergen, notes that until recently the Arctic ocean quickly froze in the winter. But now everything has changed. The Barents sea has become lose most of ice during the winter, and, apparently, expects a similar large part of the ocean.

The American organization the national center for the study of snow and ice in the US publishes detailed information, in particular, with the support of NASA.

The center said that sea ice in the Arctic reached a maximum on 17 March. Then the ice was 14,48 million square kilometers. In the 40 years that underway measurements from satellites, this is the second worst performance.

Over the past four years the ice cover of the ocean is steadily declining.

This winter the temperatures around the Arctic ocean was four degrees higher than usual. And the temperature is seven.

The scientist believes that in 2020-e years, many seas of the Arctic ocean will be completely ice free in the summer. And then a similar fate may await the sea ice in winter. This can have both positive and negative consequences.

To the positive should include great opportunities for shipping, fishing and mining.

In this connection, it may significantly increase the role of the Norwegian Kirkenes. Large volumes of products can be sent to the port from Europe, and from there to Asia.

But climate change means, however, and a serious jolt to the ecosystem and challenges for the peoples living in the ice.

In the case of continued warming, large amounts of methane now frozen in the Siberian ice, will be on the surface. This will lead to further warming of the globe.

Scientists say that by the end of this century the Arctic ocean could be ice-free.

Now in the summer in the ocean, with only 4.5 million square kilometers of ice, and in 1980-e years the ice covered area of almost eight million.

Previously, NASA released a video of melting glaciers of Antarctica and the Arctic.
