Poor sleep may contribute to the development of Alzheimer’s disease

American scientists from Johns Hopkins University found almost a threefold increase in the risk of Alzheimer’s disease in people who often experience drowsiness during the day. This was reported on the website of the institution.

The researchers analyzed data from 123 volunteers who aging over 16 years reported their health status and have passed the positron emission tomography of the brain.

It turned out that the volunteers who complained of daytime sleepiness, were almost three times more likely to experience deposition in the brain of the protein beta-amyloid peptide, namely peptide Aβ42, which is considered one of the main factors causing Alzheimer’s disease.

According to one study author Adam SPIRA, the findings allow scientists to talk about the relationship between sleep disorders and the development of Alzheimer’s disease. The scientist added that this confirms the hypothesis that poor sleep may contribute to the development of the disease.

As at the moment, treatments for Alzheimer’s disease does not exist, it is necessary to improve ways of preventing the disease, including the treatment of sleep disorders, concluded Speer.

It is believed that Alzheimer’s disease occurs due to the accumulation in neurons of pathogenic substances – protein beta-amyloid. It is formed from the scraps of the APP protein, which is involved in the processes of repair of the damaged neurons and links between them. Irregularities in the processing of the molecules of this protein leads to the appearance of plaques of beta-amyloid and the destruction of nerve cells.

Previously, scientists found that long sleep is deadly. People who sleep about 10 hours a day, prone to premature death by 30% more.

It was also reported that scientists have determined how sex affects a person’s ability to fall asleep. The study involved 460 people.
