Marriage good for health

In the presence of one of the major risk factors of heart disease marriage increases the chances of survival.

Marriage good for health, increasing the chances of survival in the presence of one of the major risk factors for heart disease, such as high cholesterol, according to British scientists.

The fact that a loving spouse can make you take better care of themselves, suggested the researchers, presenting the results of the study at the conference of the British society for cardiovascular diseases.

Dr. Paul Carter and his colleagues who prepared the study, has previously stated that marriage increases the chances of survival of a heart attack. Their new work explains what it can be connected.

They assume that marriage helps to protect people from exposure to risk factors such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure or diabetes.

The study involved almost a million Britons who had discovered these health problems.

Scientists have found that the chances of women and men around the age of 50, 60 and 70 years old with high cholesterol to survive until the end of the 14-year study were 16 percent higher if they were married.

The same principle worked for those who suffer from diabetes and high blood pressure.

The results for those who cohabited, separated from husband or divorced, or widowed, were not as clear.

The researchers did not consider whether the marriage of the research participants happy, but they suspect that is not so much the fact of marriage, how being with a loved one.

“Apparently, there is something in marriage that protects not only people with heart disease, but also those who have risk factors,” – says Carter.

“We’re not saying we have to pereginets. We need to reproduce the positive effect of marriage and use friends, family, and social support services in the same way,” he said.

“Are you married or not, if you have one of the major risks for heart disease, you can ask loved ones to help you cope with them,” agrees Mike Nepton from the British Fund to fight cardiovascular disease.

Risk factors for heart disease:

  • Smoking
  • high pressure
  • high cholesterol
  • diabetes
  • obesity
  • a passive lifestyle
  • heredity
  • age

Previously, scientists said that marriage contributes to the victory over cancer. Meanwhile, Italian researchers believe that marriage harms the health of older women.
